So you've decided to make the "A Little Bedazzling" quilt coat- this is first quilt coat I made and I wear it all the time! So after you've chose which quilt pattern to use, now you need to figure out how much fabric you need. So let's get started!
Firstly, how to read a garment pattern fabric requirements:
For the purposes of making a quilt coat, you can ignore any amounts for "lining" or "interfacing" fabrics. The nature of a quilt coat means the interfacing isn't necessary, and the lining will effectively be our "quilt backing"- so we will cover off on how to determine how much of that you need also (spoiler alert: It's the same amount as you need for the outside of your quilt coat (or what is effectively your quilt top)).
Here is an example of the fabric requirements for a coat pattern:
Tip: If you haven't received your pattern yet, you can google the pattern number and you should be able to find a photo with the fabric requirements listed.
Let’s say in this case we want to make a size 14 (circled)
- If your Width of Fabric (WOF) is 45”, you would need 3.5 yards (plus extra- see below)
- If your Width of Fabric (WOF) is 60”, you need 2 7/8 yards (plus extra- see below)
So for the All Business, in this example (using this quilt coat pattern and making a size 14, you need:
45” WOF:
- Coat outer fabric (or quilt top) 3.5 yards + 0.5-0.75 yards extra for the binding
- Coat lining (or quilt backing) 3.5 yards + 0.5- 0.75 yards extra for the internal binding
- 1-2 fat quarters for the "Bedazzling" (or you can use scraps)
- A note about binding: you can make your own with the existing/ matching fabric OR Bessie Pearl Textiles makes absolutely STUNNING bias binding - and you can use the code quiltcoat to het 15% off all full price bias tape and quilt binding here.
- NB: Most quilting cottons are approximately 44” so you may need slightly more than stated
60” WOF:
- Coat outer (or quilt top) 2 7/8 yards + 0.5-0.75 yards extra for the binding
- Coat lining (or quilt backing) 2 7/8 yards + 0.5- 0.75 yards extra for the internal binding
- 1-2 fat quarters for the "Bedazzling"
- A note about binding: you can make your own with the existing/ matching fabric OR Bessie Pearl Textiles makes absolutely STUNNING bias binding - and you can use the code quiltcoat to het 15% off all full price bias tape and quilt binding here.
